Riding through Piave and the lagoon

The excursion starts from Ponte della Vittoria, connecting point between Musile di Piave and San Donà di Piave.
The current bridge was rebuilt in place of the one set off by the Italian troops in November 1917, in order to stop the Austro- Hungarian advance, and the one bombed by the Anglo-American air force in 1944. Riding along the right bank you reach Chiusa Intestadura: this water management infrastructure, begun in the early 17th century, allowed to divert the river Piave toward Eraclea, distancing it from the lagoon. Without passing the Chiusa, proceed along the unpaved road (restèra) parallel to the right bank of the river Piave Vecchia, the original riverbed, until you reach Caposile. Not far from the Tempio ai Caduti del Basso Piave (the church dedicated do the fallen during WWII) there is the pontoon bridge to the convergence of Piave Vecchia, Taglio del Sile and Sile, which allows to follow the watercourse of the latter up to Santa Maria di Piave. Along the way it is possible to glimpse eastward the valleys of the Venetian lagoon. In Santa Maria di Piave you can ford the river Sile through a cycling-pedestrian bridge and then, crossing the agricultural landscape on secondary roads, return to the Provincial Road on the Piave bank. Heading up along the right bank, the circuit closes its path back to Musile. The itinerary twists and turns through paved and unpaved roads; we recommend the use of city bikes or mountain bikes.
