The Saccisica Umida
The Saccisica is an area of over 250 kmq behind the Venetian lagoon, between the provinces of Venice and Padua. There are different interpretations related to the origin of the name Saccisica, both of topographic and ethnographic nature; the term appeared for the first time in a XI century document, while previously there was the term sacca (sack, bag) indicating a natural, landlocked inlet. The itinerary, surrounded by fish valleys and the reclamation countryside, begins from the area of the casoni in Codevigo and arrives, through a dirt road, the Fogolana water pump and the Boschettona beach, destination for canoeing, surfing and kitesurfing enthusiasts. Then proceed along the lagoon, immersed in the nature of Valle Millecampi up to Chioggia.
Millecampi Valley, with an extension of about 1.600 hectares, represents an extraordinary example of lagoon landscape formed by canals, fish valleys, marshes, sandbanks and mirrors of fresh and brackish water. Its environmental characteristics make it the ideal habitat for many species of birds and aquatic animals. Finally, getting back along the river Bacchiglione, you reach the phytoremediation Ca’ di Mezzo Oasis.
It was realized between 1999 and 2009, flooding 30 hectares to improve the surface water quality of the Bacchiglione, thus recreating a natural environment rich in biodiversity.
Get inspired
Along the route you can visit the Casoni della Fogolana and the Casone delle Sacche. These are reproductions of the typical buildings in the rural countryside near or the lagoon or within it, characterized by the roof covered with straw or reeds that make them similar to huts. Today they are used as environmental education centers for schools and as locations for cultural events (conferences, concerts, plays, workshops, etc.), as well as a reference point for hiking, biking, canoeing and kayaking.
Our tip
“Scene di Paglie. Casoni and Waters Festival” is the auteur theatre and music festival that, since its first edition in 2009, takes place among casoni, water pumps, courts, villas and squares of the Saccisica territory, including the Municipality of Codevigo and the neighbouring ones.
Between June and July actors, musicians and performers of both national and international renown alternate on stage leading the contemporary artistic production to measuring itself with a thematic itinerary that changes every year.
