Wear processes
Assessment of the wear processes and critical factors caused by mass tourism in the city of Venice and its lagoon
The project has the aim of identifying the main factors of physical and perceptive wear, which the historical and artistic heritage in the historical center of Venice is exposed to, the main critical elements on the UNESCO Site and the tools necessary to measure their effect.
The research “Assessment of the wear processes and critical factors of the city of Venice and its lagoon and respective effect on the protection of the site in relation to the UNESCO Management Plan” conducted by Prof. Paolo Gasparoli in collaboration with the Polytechnic University in Milan and the Superintendence of architectural and landscape heritage of Venice and Lagoon, places particular attention on the effects of the human pressure caused by tourism and makes an assessment of its level of peril. Its aim is to identify measurable parameters to monitor the mitigation of the most relevant phenomena. The study as revealed that the phenomena which are responsible for the wear are complex and in some cases difficult to assess because they are strongly inter-connected. Together with the description of the manifestation and development of these phenomena, the research dealt with the issue of monitoring the risk factors and their mitigation.
Furthermore, within the project a research entitled “Case study about the knowledge and restoration works of the external walls of the facades of Venetian buildings” was developed, which inserts itself in the field of the issue of preserving the surfaces of the facades of historical Venetian buildings. The study carried out by dott.ssa Angela Squassina in collaboration with the Superintendence of architectural and landscape heritage of Venice and Lagoon describes the restoration works performed by craftsmen and companies operating in the historical center of Venice and illustrates operational methods and techniques adopted during the restorations in order to define possible future lines of intervention to guarantee the actual preservation of the buildings and their characteristic features.
“Assessment of the wear processes and critical factors of the city of Venice and its lagoon caused by mass tourism” is a specific project of the 2012-2018 Management Plan inserted in framework of the Action Plan “Protection and conservation of the patrimony”.
The project, which was launched in 2012 with the contribution of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Tourism, Law 77/2006 – “Special measures of protection and enjoyment of Italian sites of cultural, landscape and environmental interest, included in the World Heritage List, and placed under the protection of the UNESCO” – was concluded in May 2015. The results of the research were collected in the volume “Fragile Venice. Wear processes of the urban system and possible mitigations”, Altralinea Edizioni 2014 edited by Paolo Gasparoli and Francesco Trovò.
