Interregional Superintendence of Public Works

The Interregional Superintendence of Public Works (former Venice Water Authority) is a body of the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport responsible for, among others, hydraulic safeguard, safety and protection of a large area stretching from Veneto to Friuli Venezia Giulia and Trentino Alto Adige.

Following the signing of the Act of Understanding in 2007, the Interregional Superintendence of Public Works  became a member of the “Steering Committee” of the UNESCO Site “Venice and its Lagoon”. The Committee holds the following Institutional powers regarding the protection, enhancement and management of the Site’s assets: protection of Venice and its Lagoon. Competence extends over the entire Lagoon of Venice, and it encompasses protection from erosion and water management of the territory and of the lagoon habitat (low seabed, lagoon channels, salmarshes), protection from high tides (MOSE System) and heavy seas, authorization to dump in the lagoon, waterways traffic, authorization the discharge into the lagoon, regulation of water traffic.

The projects of the Management Plan involving the Interregional Superintendence of Public Works

  • Rehabilitation of the wetland landscape along the lagoon edges
  • Construction of a cycle route along the canals (from Mirano to Lova, from Lova to Rosara as far as the Chioggia fish-farms)
