Forts, gun batteries, telemetric towers, barracks and bunkers: a historical, cultural and architectural patrimony concentrated just in the Municipality of Cavallino-Treporti, located in Venice’s northeastern lagoon. This territory is characterized by the high concentration of buildings erected to protect the city of Venice. It is a patrimony which has been dismissed from military use for many years and is being recovered today, and whose value it is truly worth enhancing, since it is an important trace of the history of the Venetian lagoon. A bike ride can lead you on the discovery of the fortifications, which are spread all along the coastline. The buildings date back approximately to the Austrian period and the two World Wars, and are today surrounded by vegetable gardens. Many are in an abandoned state, others are used as warehouses, and others still have been reconverted into homes or touristic facilities.
